Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum

From the outside, Jedburgh Castle Jail looks like a grand castle, but step inside, and you’ll discover a whole new story waiting to be told. Built in the 1820s on the site of a medieval castle (and the town’s gallows!), this former "model prison" offers a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century prison life.

Wander through the cell blocks, follow prisoner stories, and uncover why some at the time called it the “most comfortable jail in Scotland.”  In the Jailer’s House the rich history and development of the town is explored.

For kids, it’s a blast! They can dress up, get hands-on with fun activities, and dive into history in an engaging way. But beware—these walls have gained a spooky reputation for ghostly sightings! Feeling brave? Join one of our overnight events or paranormal investigations.

Entry to the Castle is free but please donate to help us maintain this unique attraction.

Whether you’re here for history, family fun, or a little scare, Jedburgh Castle Jail has something for everyone.
