Songwriting & Rapping Up - Workshop 2

( 11am to 1pm ) Continue your creative journey with Songwriting for Self-Expression, the second session in our OILCAN feeder workshop series.

(1pm to 2pm) Immediately followed by a short 1hr session - Rapping up! This concludes the OILCAN workshops. During this session, you'll consolidate your previous work from this workshop series and learn how to get involved with a nationwide contemporary musical!

This workshop is all about discovering how music can give voice to your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or a total beginner, you’ll be supported in experimenting with song structure, melody, rhythm, and lyrics to explore storytelling through sound. No need to play an instrument—just bring your ideas, your notebook, and a willingness to explore.

You’ll work with experienced facilitators in a relaxed, inclusive environment, gaining songwriting techniques you can take forward into your own projects—or even see featured in OILCAN – the musical.

This follows on from Session 1: Writing Ourselves for the Stage. To see the details for this event, click here.

About the Musical

OILCAN - the musical is a bold and innovative musical blending contemporary rap with traditional Scottish airs. Power, identity, and community leadership are all explored. Developed through collaborative workshops, the musical amplifies unheard voices, telling the stories of communities facing political and social challenges.

At its core, OILCAN – the musical is a platform for creative expression, where participants contribute ideas, lyrics, and scripts that may shape the final production.

This hands-on creative session blends playwriting, songwriting, and performance, introducing the core skills behind musical theatre writing.

This workshop offers a unique chance to explore storytelling through music with opportunities to get professionally published.

Through attending one of our feeder workshops, you can develop skills in musical writing, connect with a wider artistic community, and potentially see your work both published and featured in a professional production!
